In March 2026, a powerful Kona low storm damaged South Kīhei Road near Kama‘ole II Beach Park in Kīhei, creating urgent repair needs in a heavily traveled area. The storm impacted roadway, drainage, waterline and other County infrastructure systems.
The County of Maui expedited a coordinated, multi-department repair project, with crews actively working to restore the area safely and strengthen infrastructure for long-term resilience. The project included roadway repairs, drainage improvements, slope and site stabilization, waterline restoration, paving and final site restoration.
Following the storms, the County Department of Public Works develop a project design that protected against recurring failures during future storms. The sensitivity of the shoreline area added to the complexity of the project design. Following project design, a construction contractor was procured through a competitive bidding process, and construction began on June 1, 2026.
Construction was completed and the road reopened on Aug. 11, 2026, several weeks ahead of the initial estimated completion timeframe of late August.

In March 2026, two Kona storms brought heavy rains and flooding that impacted communities across the State of Hawai‘i. The County of Maui is continuing to work alongside partner agencies and organizations to support response and recovery efforts. South Kīhei Road near Kamaʻole II Beach Park reopened today, Aug. 11, ahead of the original fall completion estimate following repairs to infrastructure damaged by the March Kona low. Kama‘ole II Beach Park and its restrooms have also reopened, with some sensitive park areas remaining temporarily barricaded.
After complex repairs from storm damage, South Kīhei Road near Kama‘ole II Beach Park will reopen to traffic on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, according to the County of Maui Department of Public Works (DPW). The reopening is ahead of the original completion estimate of this fall.
Crews have restored the park area with sand, completed the curb, gutter and sidewalk concrete work, and finished the road base. Paving is scheduled for Aug. 4 and 5, followed by final site restoration. Originally scheduled for completion in fall 2026, the project is now anticipated to be completed by Aug. 14.

The contractor completed the installation of the catch basin and reinforced concrete piping for the storm drain system that was damaged during the storms.

Kama‘ole Beach Park II, including restrooms, reopened on Aug. 11, 2026, upon the completion of the road repairs. Sections of the park remain barricaded to protect sensitive hydromulching work that promotes regrowing grass and native plants. Pedestrians are asked to avoid closed areas.
